Greek Version
Περιεχόμενο του Συνεδρίου
This page presents the Greek-language version of the II International Conference, "The Dramatic Changes on the Planet and the Hellenic Roots of Ecological Ethics" (ΟΙ ΔΡΑΜΑΤΙΚΕΣ ΑΛΛΑΓΕΣ ΣΤΟΝ ΠΛΑΝΗΤΗ ΚΑΙ ΟΙ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΕΣ ΡΙΖΕΣ ΤΗΣ ΟΙΚΟΛΟΓΙΚΗΣ ΗΘΙΚΗΣ). The conference was jointly organized by the University of Patras and the International Center for Sciences and Hellenic Values, continuing the First International Conference held in Ancient Olympia from 28–31 August 2016.
The event took place at the University of Patras Conference Center in Patras, Greece, from 17 to 20 June 2018. Professor Emeritus S. A. Paipetis served as Conference Chairman, with Mrs. Aikaterini Panagopulos, President of the International Center for Sciences and Hellenic Values, as Conference Vice-Chairman.
The ancient Hellenic worldview recognized humanity as an integral part of the natural order, not its master. Philosophers from the Presocratics onward contemplated the cosmos as a living, harmonious whole governed by inherent laws and balance. This deep ecological sensibility, rooted in concepts such as physis and kosmos, offers a powerful antidote to the dramatic environmental changes threatening our planet today. By returning to these foundational ideas, contemporary society can rediscover a framework for ecological ethics that emphasizes stewardship, restraint, and reverence for the Earth. The conference explores how these timeless Hellenic values can guide meaningful action in our troubled times.
Modern environmental degradation demands not only scientific solutions but also a profound ethical reorientation. The Hellenic tradition provides exactly such a moral compass, grounded in reason, virtue, and the pursuit of harmony between human activity and the natural world. Speakers and researchers from diverse disciplines gather to investigate how ancient principles of moderation, responsibility, and collective well-being can inform present-day policies on pollution, ecosystem protection, and sustainable development. This interdisciplinary dialogue bridges the gap between antiquity and the contemporary crisis, offering a unique perspective on how philosophical heritage can illuminate the path toward a more balanced and respectful relationship with our planet.
The conference brings together specialists, professors, and researchers from around the world to examine the Hellenic roots of ecological ethics in the face of dramatic planetary changes. Through original presentations and unpublished papers, participants explore themes ranging from the Presocratic understanding of nature to the application of ancient ethical frameworks in modern environmental science. The proceedings emphasize the urgent need for measures that address the quality of life, ecosystem health, and the protection of natural resources. By fostering this exchange between the wisdom of antiquity and the challenges of the present, the event seeks to cultivate a renewed sense of ecological responsibility rooted in the enduring values of Hellenic civilization.
